CFO Advisory

CFo AdvisORY

CFO Advisory: Market Summary 2026 Market Overview The CFO advisory market has entered a period of exceptional dynamism. Valued at approximately $15 billion in 2025, the market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7%, reaching $25 billion by 2033. This expansion is driven by the increasing complexity of financial regulation, macroeconomic volatility, the AI transformation of finance functions, and a sustained wave of M&A activity. The CFO role itself has undergone a fundamental redefinition. Today's finance chief is no longer a back-office steward of the balance sheet — they are a co-architect of enterprise strategy, expected to navigate digital transformation, geopolitical risk, ESG mandates, and capital allocation decisions simultaneously. This expanded mandate is creating both a talent gap and a demand surge for specialist advisory support. Key Market Drivers 1. Record CFO Turnover Global CFO appointments reached a seven-year high in 2025, with 316 incoming CFOs globally — a 10% year-on-year increase. In the S&P 500 alone, a record 106 appointments were made. In the UK's FTSE 100, average CFO tenure fell to a record low of 4.95 years (down from a seven-year average of 6.8 years), reflecting mounting pressure from boards, activist investors, and the weight of expanding mandates. This churn is generating sustained demand for specialist CFO search and advisory services. 2. The AI & Digital Finance Transformation Artificial intelligence has arrived at the heart of finance. In Deloitte's Q4 2025 CFO Signals survey, 87% of CFOs identified AI as extremely or very important to their finance department's operations in 2026. Digital transformation of the finance function was cited as the No. 1 priority for 2026 by 50% of respondents. Organisations are seeking CFO-level leaders who can not only sponsor these transformation programmes, but evaluate AI ROI, manage model risk, and govern responsible AI deployment — a profile that is scarce in the talent market. 3. M&A Appetite and Strategic Investment Despite macroeconomic headwinds, deal appetite remains strong. 63% of CFOs report their organisations have greater interest in pursuing M&A in 2026 compared to 2025. Advisory demand across transaction services — due diligence, valuation, post-merger integration, and capital raising — continues to grow, particularly in financial services and private equity. 4. Cost Optimisation vs. Growth Tension Gartner's 2026 CFO survey reveals a market defined by competing priorities: cost optimisation dominates the agenda, yet a growing subset of CFOs is pivoting toward growth investment. CFO confidence rose to its highest level since late 2021, with 59% of finance leaders indicating now is a good time to take greater risks. This creates advisory demand across both efficiency-focused mandates (finance transformation, shared services, FP&A automation) and growth-oriented ones (market entry, capital strategy, investor relations). 5. ESG, Regulation, and Reporting Complexity Regulatory pressure on CFOs continues to intensify globally, particularly around sustainability reporting, climate risk disclosures, and evolving tax frameworks. Finance leaders are increasingly expected to own ESG reporting strategy — bridging the gap between sustainability commitments and investor-grade financial disclosure
